Mary Burke

About the Artist

Mary Burke is from Chicago, but now lives in Southwest Michigan. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions, both nationally and internationally such as in Italy and South America, and has been featured in Newsweek magazine’s internet art gallery. Her Bachelor of Arts degree is from the University of Chicago, and her Master of Fine Arts degree is from the University of Minnesota. She has also studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Princeton University. Her work can be seen in several publications such as The American Art Collector, The Artful Home, The Chicago Art Scene, and Suite Home Chicago.

Mary gains inspiration from the woods that surround her home studio.  Exploring various ways to interpret aspects of the natural world, she approaches the 2D surface as a page from a naturalist’s workbook. A wide interpretation of nature’s geometry can approach the abstract. The dichotomy of geometric and organic forms working together interests her.  Abstract and figurative elements mingle as images, marks, and thoughts.  Random marks, splashes, or drips rest next to deliberately honed patterns and forms.  Accident and intent work hand in hand as various mediums are applied. The ephemeral appeal of a flower can have as much visual impact as a decaying tree branch. Degeneration and regeneration are constant in nature, and she seeks to give form to these forces. By mingling abstract and figurative elements, she allows the viewer space for imaginative thinking.
